Miami-Dade Schools Police Sergeant David Thompson served his department for two decades.
Pembroke Pines, FL – Miami-Dade Schools Police Department (MDSPD) Sergeant David Thompson died suddenly of a heart attack on Feb. 22.

Sgt. Thompson, 53, was at home recovering from a work-related knee surgery when the medical emergency occurred, the Miami Heraldreported.

The injury stemmed back to a Jan. 15 altercation at Miami Central High School, during which an 18-year-old student suspected of burglary began fighting with the sergeant while being taken into custody.

Sgt. Thompson lost his balance, severely injuring his knee in the fall, and later underwent surgery to repair the damage.

After suffering the heart attack at his Miami Gardens home, the veteran officer was rushed to Memorial Hospital West, but doctors were unable to revive him.

Prior to his career in law enforcement, Sergeant Thompson served in the United States Army, Miami-Dade Schools Police Chief Edwin Lopez told the Miami Herald.

He went on to serve the MDSPD for 20 years, turning down multiple opportunities for promotions in order to continue his work with students.
“He wanted to stay because of his impact with the kids,” Chief Lopez explained.

Sgt. Thompson served as a school resource officer at Miami Central High School and William H. Turner Technical Arts High School.

He had also been one of the department’s field training officers for the past 18 years.
“He had a large impact on the department,” Chief Lopez said. “He was a God-fearing faithful man with an everlasting presence in the community.”
Sgt. Thompson leaves behind his wife, Raylene, as well as their four children and one grandchild, according to his obituary. He was laid to rest on March 2.
